Small town hockey is very different than hockey in the larger urban areas. Small town hockey means that if you are the right age, regardless of experience, ability or gender, you are on the team. We have 11 kids on our team, 1 fiesty girl and 10 "hockey luvin" boys. For 2 of these kids it's only their second year playing hockey. Our coaches are great, with more than enough adults to go around. We are going to the Provincials for the second year in a row!
This year, was the first year that our team has been allowed to check (hit) This is something have they dreamed and spoken of since they first picked up a hockey stick. The first few games were very low scores, with most of the kids on both teams, forgetting about goal scoring and embracing the ability to run into other players for absolutely no reason.
My son's a little guy, but he's fast and he gets around the big guys. This makes him a target for the dreaded check. The big one happened on his 4th game in, a smash into the boards that broke his collar bone clean in half. It was only when his coach noticed him not having much power in his shot that he admitted that it hurt . A bit. We've been to the hospital once since then with a concussion scare. And he's always eager to play the next game.
The reason our little catch all team does so well is their heart. They love the game, always have
fun. They are used to working with different abilities, and share their strengths. They like each other.
Chances are high that our team , like last year, will get their eager little butts beat at provicials. But I have a feeling that in the team pictures we'll have the biggest smiles.
