My son is a natural born athelete. All from his father's genetic pool.
At 2 months old, he could find the blue ball in one of his board book, on every page.
He had 4 words in his vocabulary until he was 2 1/2, mom, dad, bop( his sis) and ball.
When I tried to interest him in printing his name at 4 he told me "No mom, I am going to be a hockey player in the winter, a soccer player in the spring and I will be a golfer in the summer. I don't need to learn to write my name"
He has played hockey and soccer since 6. Basketball, floor hockey and track at school. If it's a sport, he is in his element.
This year is the first year he has played ball, and they are in a tournament this weekend. He phoned me after his first game and said " I get to pitch next game." So I drove out to see them.
First inning on the mound, 9 strikes in a row, same the next and the next.
A man came up to me during the game.
Hi, I'm ........... from Alta Minor League Ball Provincial team. That your son pitching?
Yep
How long has he been pitching?
What time is it?
2 :30
About 20 minutes.
He gives me that "You don't look that stupid look", but asks again,
How long has he been playing?
Since last month.
On this team ?
First time on a team. period. but he has a target painted on the side of the barn that he's been throwing at for years. Could you schooch over a bit, I can't see the field.
He sighs,
Is your husband here?
Yep he's over there.
I see the guy go over to chat with my husband and hand my husband a card.
The boy has just been scouted.
And an update:
The boy and his dad talked about it on the way home. Our son had been invited to tryouts for a special traveling team. This conversation was soooooo my boy.
Dad:Well it's a team that travels all over the Western provinces to compete over the summer.
Boy:
- Can musketeer 1 and 2 play too? no
- All summer? yes
- What about summer holidays? that will be your holiday
- Do we have to drive? they have a bus
- That'll take to much time, can't we fly? no son, you can't fly
- When will I get to play with m1 and 2? well, you might be pretty busy
- doesn't sound like too much fun to me, tell the guy no, but thanks anyway.
And once again he has his priorities perfectly alligned, a lazy summer with best friends.

Oh How exciting though! To be asked to be on a traveling team! I agree with your son, he should spend the summer being a child, having fun with his best friends. There will be plenty of offers later for him since he seems to be such an outstanding player! There is time. He should be a kid now, and do kid things in my opinion, your only a child once! Now if he wanted to do this, then that is a whole nother story. Wow Hope you must be so proud of him!!!!(((Hope)))
Sounds like a good summer to me!
But, exciting, none-the-less to be drafted! :-)
WOW AND WOW!
How great he is that good! And How great it is to see he knows he is too young for something like that and that he needs to hang out with his friends.
Great!
You should be proud.!
I know people with kids on these traveling teams. Most of them are parents who are so overbearing on their kids to be winners, that the kid has lost all concept of it being fun. The kids, robbed of their childhood, are constantly under pressure to perform.
Some of the parents actually believe they are grooming their kids for professional careers in athletics. Many of them have agents....yeah, agents! The fact is, if the kid is that good and has that much natural ability, he will be scouted until he doesn't play anymore. If he's not, well then no amount of baseball camps or traveling leagues will change that to the level of being a Major League prospect.
Perhaps his senior year in high school would be a good time to start entertaining the offers of some of these "scouts". But for now, like you said, his priorities are dead on. Good for him...good for you.
