Survivor:
Cook Island

(I've edited at 2 comments,
just cause I was pondering this all day)

I may have alluded to it in the past, but here it is in black and white.
I am a huge Survivor Fan.
And speaking of black and white... you must have heard the latest.

In the new Survivor season teams will be divided by race.

And let the wild rumpus begin.............

Everything I've heard so far is negative about this decision.... the general consensus... it will create racial tension, will be harmful and is just a ratings stunt.
While I while concede it's all about ratings, I fail to "get" why this would create or inflate racial tension.
This world is abound with "racial tension".
It is, sadly, an ingrained part of society.
I look forward to seeing how this plays out.
I hope it will help us examine and acknowledge the differences between races,
and realize as it plays out that it doesn't matter.

Race is not about who we are.

When they divided the teams in to the sexes. last season .... there was no outcry, and you can be almost positive that initially the women viewers cheered for the women, and the men cheered for the men, and ogled the women.
There is far more difference between the sexes than the races.
Culture and gender have significantly more differences than race.
I hope this "experiment "will show racial issues for what they are and start some dialogue.
All this from Survivor??? It will be what it is.

And an aside.
I know the picture is small, but it seems our fourth race is not represented.

I think the sentiment behind the anger is somewhat well-placed, but doesn't exactly address the fact that as you said, this is definitely not yet a color-blind society.

My husband and I have been lightly debating whether it was a good idea to do the divisions this way on survivor. We've looked at it from many different angles and have come to the conclusion that we don't know yet. We do plan to watch to see what if anything develops because of it.

I also agree that the gender and age separation last time is in the same catagory as this.

It should be interesting.

I really don't like the idea because I don't think we are responsible enough as a whole to look at it from the angle you suggest.

I think when talking about it around the water cooler, racist remarks will fly, lines will be drawn and it will lead to a whole new level of segregation. At least in my country. It's all still raw and all still too prominent in the US. This will just give someone the "right" to choose sides.
