Prosperity: The joys of living in Alberta

Yesterday we received our prosperity cheques. For those of you living outside this great province, each man, woman and child of Alberta has been given 400.00, as our provincial coffers are overflowing. Not here to debate the should ofs and could ofs of this money, because what is done is done. However it has caused an interesting dilemma in our household. When it was first announced that this money was coming our way, my 11 year old son was assuming (wrongly) that he would be off on a shopping spree to the nearest electronics store. We broke the news to him that it would be going into his RESP (registered education savings plan), unless he could come up with a sound plan of how to use it.
Well, he came up with a plan, and it's even a good one, great return on investment, excellent learning experience, but there's a catch... He wants to buy a calf, raise it and butcher it in the fall. Gulp. We live on 4 fenced acres, so the logistics are great. The problem is me. Although I am not a vegetarian, I tend to get really attached to the animals in my life and this "up close and personal" part of meat eating will be new to me. Can I really look "Daisy" in the eye and say,"Eat up Daisy, we want some extra thick T-Bones for the grill" Now I don't want any animal right's groups trying to convert me. I don't wear fur. I eat meat. Period.
If he wants to follow through with this plan, we'll support him, but come fall I may need to trade electronics for a cow, and have a pet named Daisy.

Amen Hope, there's room for all God's creatures.......right next to the mashed potatos! Heck yeah fatten her cute little butt up and eat her.

Your son sounds quite industrious. Great idea. You don't have to attend the butchering. It's not like a ceremony or anything.
