My daughter is off on a house boating holiday and as of yesterday, the Cree Princess moved in.

With her came a black lab, a golden retriever, a male lop eared rabbit and his ever so pregnant mate.
The hamster stayed home.
Too much like a mouse, it would not have survived here.
Along with the menagerie came a large rolling suitcase of all weather clothing, enough DVD 's to stock a store, a vtech video game AND the Easy Bake Oven.

There is a history behind the Easy Bake Oven.

Although I can't remember it, my daughter claims that lack of an Easy Bake Oven when she was a child, profoundly and emotionally impacted her.
Enough that she brought it up every time she saw a commercial.
"Gosh she would sigh. I remember wanting an Easy Bake Oven more than anything in the world."

Where was I?
How did I miss this important fact in my daughters upbringing?.
How could I have been so insensitive?

I attempted to correct this oversight in my parenting.

Last Christmas I bought a beautiful Queen and Princess Tea set, and an Easy Bake Oven for my daughter and her daughter.

At least I could create wonderful memories
from my daughter's unfulfilled and tragic up bringing.

But the Easy Bake Oven ended up here, covered by a slight coat of dust and most of the original packaging.

Even before her mom left the Cree princess was announcing her plan for her and I to make yellow cakes with white icing for everyone for supper.

I was so in agreement, that I took pictures for her mom, so that she would have an Easy Bake memory.
It started like this:

NOTE:
picture will not post, so envision;
kitchen table, stirring batter with EasyBake Oven in background.

The instruction said 12 minutes, and so the cake was placed in the oven, the kitchen timer set and we proceeded to clean up.
When the timer was off, we used the large spatula provided to pull out the cake, and found a barely warm pan, and the same gooey batter.
Not deterred, we reset the timer.
We did this for the next three hours with only slight degree of EASY BAKING evident.
The Cree Princess lost interest and was on the deck with the rabbits when the timer went off, and I went to check again.
This time I read the notice embossed in the plastic: WARMING OVEN ONLY.
Gotcha.
Searching for the correct opening I went to relocate the cake.
But it ended up flying off the spatula and on to my camera.
With the Cree Princess out of sight, I did my best to remake the cake which was slightly baked and really gooey.
I must have ignored the ever present timer beep, because the next time I remembered the cake I smelled a slight burning smell
Well at least half of the cake was done, and ready to be turned.
Eager to apprise the CP of our progress I called her, and she arrived just in time to see me once again drop the cake, this time on the floor.
We did salvage the slightly burnt part, because we have a ten second rule about eating off the floor, so the Cree princess ended up with a crescent moon shaped piece of slightly burnt yellow cake covered ( ok, hidden ) with Straberry cream cheese.
But she ate it on my lap.
And we cuddled.
That's gotta count for something.

That's so funny, Hope. I remember using mine quite a bit when I was a young girl. The ones they make now don't seem as fun, and my girls never really got into it.

Hmmmm.....I didn't have an easy bake oven as a child, but my younger sister did years later. I burned my hand on the stupid lightbulb. I have bad memories of that. So, I guess the Easy Bake oven is a loss and a gain depending on one's perspective.

i think that was a simply sweet story (minus the childhood trama for daughter)... of course, i dind't have to do the clean up either...

Awwwww Your cree princess will remember this time with you! I always wanted an easy bake oven also. My best friend had one, and I was so jealous! It sounds like you two will have lots of fun while your daughter is on vacation!

Oh, that's cute! And I really like her name, Cree Princess.

I never had an Easy Bake Oven, come to think of it. I *think* I always wanted one of those mega-huge Barbie 'doll' houses that some other friend had. But I got the Barbie Van instead, mobile, and reflects MY mothers values. (She's got her own RV now.)

That is so cute (not the stinkin spammer's comments above...) but the easy bake cake deal. I must tell you though - ha ha - this is where my obsession with cake batter and cookie dough started. So, the addiction starts here !!! ha ha

I think the Easy Bake Oven has come down from the shelf a total of four times in our house. It wasn't as big of a hit as was expected. Julie moved very quickly from that to REAL ovens when she discovered its limitations.

I'd say the cuddle counts for EVERYTHING! :-)

HYSTERICAL story! I looovve your sense of humor. That, the extreme effort on your part and the snuggling are all so much more important than a play oven...easy or difficult.

I put up a link to you on a post that's part of an on-going "linkomania" thing I'm doing. I'm going to get to a link to you on my sidebar as well, if that's okay with you. I love your writing and want to share it with others. Thanks!

Wonderful story, Hope!

I always remember wanting an Easy Bake, but alas, it was not to be.

If they don't even bake anything, how do they still sell them?

Love the new pictures, Hope! You have an awesome place there. Love the sunken hot tub...my husband wants one of those. Do you guys use it?

I'll have to try and get a sunset photo. I've never tried to take one.
