My cell phone lay dormant, in the bottom of my purse,
turned off all week because of a busy schedule of back to back meetings.
When I had a slight emergency on the back country roads yesterday,
I reached for my lifeline.
Dead..... so dead that it would not even work on my emergency car charger.
It was 2 hours before the first car passed, they stopped of course,
(we do that here), and I was able to call roadside assistance,
who came and sent me on my way.
But sitting stranded for that while, gave me some much needed down time.
It also gave me alot of time to think about how dependant I'd become.
I got my first cell phone in '95, a gift from my husband.
Although I thanked him for his thoughtfulness,
I really wanted to ask him "What were you thinking???"
The size of a Cracker Jack box and twice as heavy as my change purse,
it embarrassed me.
No one I knew had a cell phone.
It seemed pretentious and absolutely unnecessary.
I would make quiet calls from bathroom stalls.
Twelve years ago, without a cell phone , I would have
walked the 5 km to the highway, stuck out my thumb,
and got a ride home.
Instead, I sat, helpless, waiting, for another cell phone to appear on the horizon.
A Psychological Evolution, folks,
from pretentious to essential in just over a decade.

2 hours, yikes!
I am sadly addicted to the dependence of my cell phone...I am lost without it.
I also had a cell phone back in the mid 90's...when they very first graduated from the 'bag phones' to the hand held. They were HUGE! I am so glad those days are over.
I got mine around the same time. There was a guy who was stalking women on a local road, getting them to pull over with a ruse that there was something wrong with their cars.
I have only used it a couple times in emergencies, but I feel somehow unsafe without it now.
I still survive quite well without one, but I don't drive on alot of country roads. I'd probably get one if I did. My mom got hers after hitting the ditch when she was driving to the city when Maddie was born.
My how different our countries are.... Down here....you would have sat for 3-4 hours and had 20 cars pass by without even glancing at you. Then, when one did stop to help, it would be a serial killer or a Perv. Glad you got home OK.
I hear you on the Cell phone. I got mine about the same timea as you and I would be lost without it. What if the kids Needed me and I had no phone? Drives me nuts. I think Miranda should have one but she would never turn it on.
I had a man help me at Canadian tire this week. I was putting on a new wiper and he helped be get it on.
Nice people.
Isnt it great when life demands you take that needed break? I am glad you got the help you needed.
