Oh my god. I can barely contain myself, I, Hope, am officially a HOCKEY MOM. I am having one of those moments when i have to remind myself to breathe, and am not even thinking about what I'm writing. I have got to share this with everyone.
OK, Hope, breathe,
Ok ,so here's how it happened. I came this morning all prepared to find the warmest seat in the arena, and settle in to watch the game, when approached by the team manager. And, he, asked, ME, to be the timekeeper. The timekeeper. You know, the guy that gets to put, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING on the giant scoreboard that EVERYONE watches. And gets to say stuff, on the mike, like" Goal scored @3.24 by # 10, with an assist by # 4. And we get to open the doors to let the kids with penalties in and out, when their time out,I mean penalty, is over.
The most important job, however is accurately completing the Official League Scoring Sheet.
I wished they'd told me that before handing me that pen.
If I had known it was SERIOUSLY official, I never would have doodled, and written my own personal thoughts all over it. I'll remember for next time.
And the next time they ask me to be timekeeper, I'll remember that:
When the ref comes over to tell you something, you are not allowed to ask him if he's sure.
The ref's don't drop the puck when YOU start the time clock, it's the other way around.
When the kids come up to the door, where I sit, I am to let them in because they just got a penalty, they have not just skated over for a smile and thumbs up from me.
When kids are in the Penalty box, they are only interested in what time they get out, they do not want a lecture on sportsmanship.
When you get more than 1 kid in there, it really stinks.
Although coaches are allowed to call 30 second timeouts, the timekeeper is allowed none. Not even to go to the bathroom.
You are not allowed to put up that extra goal on the giant scoreboard just to encourage your team with some positive affirmation.( You see it and it is yours)
Aside from a few minor errors, I did a great job. And I had fun. I can hardly wait til they ask me again.

You are a character. I can just see a hockey mother doing what you wrote. I am not a hockey fan but I love watching the sport in person. When we were in California my wife and I were big Condor fans, even when they were not so good. I miss having a team in this area. Watching the fans is almost as enjoyable as watching the game.
Is it bad that I REALLY did do all those things?
Hockey is one thing you Canadians have that is actually pretty cool. Our ECHL team is awesome to go watch. The fans seem to get more involved with it than other sports. I've walked out of our Civic Center many times having lost my voice. I don't recall that ever happening at a football game.
Although it's become a pretty popular spectator sport, I doubt it will ever catch on as a scholastic sport south of the Mason/Dixon line. Too bad, we turn out some pretty awesome athletes down here.
I love it..I want to be a an offical time keeper. Now if my boy would just learn how to skate we would be all set.
My favorite was a lecture on sportmanship while in the BOX. Too funny! Or putting up another point just to encourage your team...your sucha MOM!
Too funny!
